Should you use a Fiverr Designer for your Book Cover?

Fiverr Cover Design Experiment

Dale L. Roberts is an indie author and YouTube content creator, and earlier this year he conducted an experiment to test out the success of using Fiverr designers to design his book cover.

He chose five designers and gave them the same creative brief, and you can see the results in a video he created, comparing the final designs. The designers were at different skill levels and pricing.

In his blog post he explains the experiment and introduces us to the designers he chose.

The blog post also includes his video review of each of the covers created for him, and provides the pros and cons of each one. Overall the quality of the covers was impeccable.

When you’re over on Fivver you can look at his curated list of designers.

Travel Guide Covers

I’ve spent a lot of time assessing the travel guide cover niche, and if you have an eye for detail and some design skills, I think it’s perfectly feasible to design your own cover and create one that screams professionalism and appeals to your target audience.

Lonely Planet are the leading travel guide publishers, so a good place to start is to review their cover design elements and title treatment.

Nonfiction Covers

For any book cover you need to make sure you adhere to niche norms, so before you:

  • Start designing your own book
  • Reach out to a cover designer on Fiverr
  • Contact a design company, or
  • Location a freelance cover designer

Make sure you’ve done your research so that you know what to include in your creative brief.

Research Book Covers in your niche

Search for books in your Amazon Category, or use niche keywords related to your book, to find examples of covers by authors who write books within your niche.

  • What do you like about the cover?
  • What don’t you like about the cover?
  • What color combinations do you like and why?
  • Which title treatment elements resonate with you?
  • What banners or call outs catch your eye?
  • What graphics or images fit your niche?

Once you’ve completed the review of your competition, it’s time to put together a creative brief and start working on your book or working with a designer.

Research Book Covers in your niche

You can get feedback on your cover in Cover Design groups or submit your design to Joel Friedlander’s monthly ebook design awards.
