Title Transfer
I wanted to opt out of Amazon KDP Expanded Distribution for my paperback, and start using IngramSpark as an additional distribution partner, but I ran into a duplicate ISBN issue during my IngramSpark book set up. You can read about that experience here and my decision to use two distributors. In order to distribute via IngramSpark I had to submit a title transfer request to them, after I’d opted out of Expanded Distribution through Amazon KDP.
Steps:
- Submit a request to IngramSpark
- IngramSpark will contact Amazon KDP
- Amazon KDP will contact you to get your transfer approval
- IngramSpark acquire your title rights
Here’s the title transfer instructions I received from IngramSpark
Please follow these steps for a successful and expedited transfer:
- Make sure your IngramSpark account is fully setup first.
- If transferring a title from an existing IngramSpark or LSI account, please copy in original publisher or let us know publisher name so we can get their approval for the transfer.
- If you are transferring from Create Space the title has to first be in expanded distribution so it arrives in our system. If in expanded distribution, please remove it. If not, please add it. We will communicate on our end with CS to transfer the title. We also recommend that you reach out to CS yourself to expedite the process. You must notify us BEFORE we move title over if you need to update price or return status.
- We only send pricing to retailers once a month.
- Complete attached transfer form. The form is to be completed by the person taking over ownership of the title. Current publisher does NOT complete the form. If you already have submitted a form to us, do not send another one. Just notify us that you have one on file.
- Reply back to this same email with your ISBN/s you would like to transfer and the completed form. Do NOT write the ISBN/s on your transfer form.
How to complete form: (Please read this to make sure your form is completed correctly. This will help avoid delays. )
- Enter your COMPANY NAME in top line and in bottom client field. Do not enter your name in the fields (unless your name is name of your publishing company)
- Enter your FULL address in the second line. This includes your zip code.
- Physically sign the form at the bottom of the signature field (or use Adobe’s digital e-sign option).
- Enter your IngramSpark account number.
- Enter the current date
Next steps:
- Your form will be reviewed and approved by our support and finance teams.
- Once approved and once we receive confirmation from the current publisher/Create Space then we will transfer title to your account.
- You will be notified when the title is listed on your account via email.
If you follow these steps it will eliminate delays so you can start ordering and managing your book.
Please allow up to 30 days for confirmation and transferal.
I’ve started the transfer process, so will write a follow up article about how this title transfer process works.

Communication from Amazon KDP
I was clearing out my inbox today and came across an email from Amazon KDP about my title transfer.
Greetings from Amazon KDP, We recently received a request from Lighting Source (Ingram) to transfer the following book(s) from our account to your person Ingram account: 9781944370398. To ensure these titles are transferred successfully, please respond to this same email with your authorization to transfer these books to Ingram and we will notify Ingram of the same.
So I’ve responded to their email with my approval to transfer the title.
Update: March 4th
I received a confirmation email from IngramSpark to confirm the transfer of my title is now complete. I submitted my completed transfer request form on January 7th, so it has taken about 2 months to complete the process.
I can no go ahead and use my ISBN to set up my title for distribution through IngramSpark.

This is very interesting. I didn’t know you could reverse the process of choosing KDP expanded distribution. How long did the process take?
The entire process took 2 months.

A bit late to the chat, but was the original ISBN you had transferred one of your own purchasing, or was it a KDP “assigned” ISBN?
Yes Josh is was an ISBN I bought from Bowker. You can’t transfer a free KDP assigned ISBN, because the ISBN is always attached to the publisher/distributor of record.

Jay – If you can’t transfer a free ISBN from KDP, then what is the way to go in order to publish in both places (without Expanded Distribution in Amazon)? Thank you for helping. Feel quite confused now. Arti (first time author)
Thank you for your article. It was well written and informative.
Really on point. So many indie authors don’t understand POD, and end up printing boxes of books instead.
Yes, I’m glad I discovered POD before I started ordering boxes of books to sit in my garage!
Thank you so much for sharing this, my biggest issue is that I can’t discount on Amazon. Does this title transfer to Ingram mean that you can then discount on Amazon?
I am a bit confused. I have one novel published with Amazon (kindle, paperback and large print). The 90 day exclusivity was July 30 for kindle (private reasons to have them published in different dates). I tried to transfer the kindle to Ingram and they kept asking for an ISBN. But as far as I know Kindles don’t have ISBN; they have ASIN… What am I missing here? And, by the way, every time I publish a book and get Ingram to sell it, they charge $25 (kindle) and $45 (paper) plus commission? Do I get it right? No other Amazon is so popular.
My book is on Amazon. I’ve been trying to add it to Ingram for months – answers feel impossible to find. Thus, I’m reaching out to a stranger on the internet! After months of going back and forth via slow responses from Ingram, all potential issues preventing transfer into their system have been removed, but they still require I transfer title from KDP to them. This book has never been in expanded distribution and I own the ISBN through Bowker. Title, according to Ingram’s site, should therefore not need a transfer.
Should I transfer title? ALL I want to understand is this: What does transferring title from Amazon to Ingram “actually” mean? How does this effect, me the author, ownership of book rights, what does it *mean* for them to have title, what am I giving up by providing Ingram title, etc…? I never thought of KDP as owning title. I thought of them as a service provider. Thank you in advance for your help.
