Extreme Nomads: A Guide to the Ultimate Adventure Lifestyle

Adventure Nomads and Guide for Digital Nomads

Nomadic Times contributor, Indiana Lee, shares her tips for balancing an adventure lifestyle and being a digital nomad

Nomads on the Rise

As more people gain the ability to work remotely, interest in the digital nomad lifestyle is increasing. While constant travel and working on the road isn’t for everyone, there is one particular group of people that is well-suited to the digital nomad lifestyle: extreme sports lovers.

If you love extreme sports and outdoor adventures, there’s a good chance you’re a solid fit for the digital nomad lifestyle. Your passion for adventure will serve as motivation to build a career that allows you to work whenever, wherever.

It’s possible to pair an extreme adventure lifestyle with the digital nomad lifestyle, but you’ll need a proper plan in place. Examining why these two lifestyles support one another so perfectly is an important first step.

Why Extreme Sports and Digital Nomadism Go Together

When you start getting tired of living out of a backpack, you have to have a clear idea of why you wanted to be a digital nomad in the first place. For extreme sports lovers, their ability to pursue their passion fuels their drive to earn money as a digital nomad. Being able to choose where in the world you work means you can chase the right seasons and the right conditions to practice your sport.

Where a location-independent worker might need to put their kiteboard in storage at the end of the season or only be able to hit the water on holidays, a digital nomad has the freedom and flexibility to change locations in order to pursue their hobby year-round.

Similarly, digital nomads who work as freelancers or are self-employed control their schedules. As long as you’re completing your projects on time, you can set your hours so you never miss a morning surf session.

Best Jobs for Extreme Nomads

Even if you don’t have a digital nomad skill set, you can still enjoy the ultimate adventure lifestyle. Other jobs for extreme sports lovers include adventure guide, search-and-rescue professional, and bush pilot. These career options will allow you to travel the world and get that all-important adrenaline rush.

If you’re computer-savvy and enjoy creating content, you should consider looking for work as a travel writer, photographer, or videographer. In addition to pitching your services to travel outlets, you could focus your efforts toward sharing your story on a blog, YouTube, or social media. It will, of course, require hard work and consistency, but documenting your interesting lifestyle will go a long way toward helping you build a following.

Tips for Extreme Digital Nomads

Once you have established how you’ll earn money as a digital nomad, you’ll need to decide where you want to kick off your adventure lifestyle. For extreme sports lovers, weather conditions and seasons will dictate where they set up their temporary home. But, don’t let warm waters and sunny skies be the only criteria for your destinations. Other factors digital nomads should consider include cost of living, the ability to find a reliable internet connection, and safety.

Due to the current global pandemic, travel is more difficult and brings with it heightened risk. Instead of solely depending on air travel, digital nomads should look into other means of transportation besides flying.

Train travel and bus travel are two solid (not to mention, more sustainable) alternatives. If your extreme sport requires bulky equipment or gear, you’re likely to pay less in baggage fees when you travel overland.

With proper planning, the digital nomad lifestyle can be the perfect fit for extreme sports lovers. The freedom and flexibility to pursue your hobby year-round are worth the effort life on the road requires.

Constant travel isn’t for everyone, but if you’re passionate about living a life that lets you do what you love, then it might be time for you to give up your home base and live the ultimate adventure lifestyle as an extreme nomad.
