In my first post I focused on 6 challenges of being a working digital nomad. And since then I’ve shared tips and ideas about the challenges of getting and staying connected, and 15 Ways Digital Nomads Boost their Motivation when working on the road. Today I’m sharing my tips and suggestions about travelling with your laptop.
Travelling with a laptop or tablet can be a pain! But there are things you can do to minimize the risks and protect your investment.
Travel Light
Opt for “travel size” laptops and devices. For some people this means a tablet, for me it means a Macbook Air.
Keep your Laptop protected
Make sure your travel insurance covers all your devices. Some insurance companies require you to “add on” laptops or tablets to your policy.
Jay says: Check the full replacement cost of your laptops or devices are covered. Make sure you check the single item limit. Even a premium plan with a $3,000 maximum limit often comes with a maximum single item cost of $600 – which if your travelling with something like a MacBook Air – would leave your coverage short.
If you happen to own or rent a house, did you know that most homeowner’s and renter’s insurance plans let you list specific items like computers on your home insurance? This coverage often covers up to the full replacement value.
Check out this resource website, Travel Insurance Review which has A Free Beginners Guide “8 Steps to Understanding Travel Insurance.” Damian started this website in 2006 to help travelers understand travel insurance, and the site features company reviews, guides, articles, and many blog posts to help you better understand travel insurance and pick the right plan for your trip (assuming you actually need travel insurance).
Keep your electronics covered
Make sure your laptop is packed well, and can withstand the knocks and bashes it will receive during it’s travels. I have a padded bag to protect my laptop, and then a hard shell case to protect from scratches.
Jay says: A hard snap-on shell is a great way to protect your laptop from scratches and that’s what I use too. But you could opt instead for a full cover removable decal like this travel inspired one below:
If you’re looking for something less bulky than a snap-on case but more rugged than a decal for your Mac, you can find a middle ground with the BodyGuardz Carbon Fiber Armor. It’s a PVC-based film that adheres to your laptop to provide a tough surface to keep your Mac scratch-free.
Keep your electronics safe
Don’t leave your stuff unattended – this is a bit of common sense, but surprisingly I hear stories from lots of people who left their laptop out in a cafe or on the bed in a dorm. Then they went to the bathroom, or order a drink, and the laptop was gone when they came back.
When you go through security your electronics are spread out and they’re not always within your sight. This situation is an open invitation to opportunistic thieves.
When you’re sightseeing you may decide to leave your electronics in your hotel room instead of carrying them around. Yes your hotel room is locked, but you have no idea who has a key. So use a hotel or in-room safe to lock your electronics away. If in doubt, err on the side of caution and keep it with you.
Jay says: I used an in-room safe in a Turkish hotel room during a layover in Istanbul. I left all my valuables in the safe that was located in the bottom of the wardrobe. It wasn’t until I went to get my belongings out that I noticed the small safe wasn’t actually secured in place, so anyone could have come into the room and taken it. Luckily they didn’t, but do double check that your safe, is actually safe!
Double up your back up
Back up your stuff – not just to an external hard drive, but also online, to a cloud or something similar. Sadly, I learnt this lesson the hard way when my external hard drive stopped working and I didn’t have a secondary backup.
Here’s a couple of articles that delve into the topic of external hard drives and cloud storage options in more detail:
