Intriguing your Reader
This Quick Tip article introduces you to 3 key travel writing elements that you should consider when writing your travel guide.
It all begins with a simple idea, which has to be expanded into a book concept that intrigues your reader, which relies on you being able to make your travel guide personal so they can connect with it.
1. Do you have a clear idea?
If you can’t summarise your book concept in a single paragraph, then your angle or theme needs more work. Think of this like your elevator pitch. You need to be able to summarise your book’s idea succinctly, and this will make it easier to write. If you’re not sure what your book is about, then it will create a confusing reader experience.
2. Have you intrigued your reader?
Pay special attention to your opening chapters. If you don’t grab your reader in the first few pages, you may lose them before they get to the guts of your guide. This is especially important now that readers are used to the “LOOK INSIDE” feature of books on Amazon (and many of the other online retailers). They even allow readers to download a free excerpt – so you need to make sure your book’s opening chapters as the best relocation of your travel guide’s content.
3. Make it personal
You don’t want your book to read like a reference book or your readers won’t be able to connect with the content. So make sure you inject a bit of “you” in the book by incorporating elements of your personality into your travel writing. You also need to write using all your 5 senses, so that your readers can connect with what you’re written.
