10 Amazing Trends For Book Cover Design

10 Amazing Trends For Book Cover Design
Guest Blog Post from: Emily Henry

Many people love to read books. Some people have their own book nooks filled with physical copies; some people read their books digitally; and some admire both print and digital.

As for the book covers, they tend to make first impressions between book and consumer more evident. In fact, the very first thing that a person will see when they look for a book online, or shop in a physical store, is the book cover. Is it interesting to look at? Does the cover make you think? What does it say about the book itself?

Trends in book cover design make it happen!

Here are 10 amazing trends to expect in books, wherever they’re sold!

1. Going All Natural

Things that come from Mother Nature – oceans, forests, animals, and so on – can be comforting to look at, when you pick up a book to read. This type of book design is ideal for readers who love to go out in nature every so often. This design is especially ideal for those who love to take their books with them while they’re out in nature!

2. Interrupted Titles

No one like a boring title.

The good news is, many of today’s books are getting creative in not only their storytelling, but also on their covers. Sometimes, books will purposefully interrupt their titles to make the design more enticing for consumers. This trend is mainly used in horror stories, murder stories, or mystery stories.

3. Let’s Illustrate

People love to see images, pictures, and so on. So, it’s no surprise that illustrations can appear on book covers. Why? “Because illustrations give consumers a straightforward answer as to what the book is going to be about, and what it involves. From romantic illustrations, to cartoony imagery, to professional artistry, etc. readers will grow interested in reading a book that has a wonderfully design book cover,” explains Truman J. Wolf, a writer at State Of Writing and UKWritings.

4. Typography

Typography, believe it or not, is popular these days. If you love wording and fonts of all sorts, then look for a book that has interesting typography on the cover. From big and bold font, to small and peculiar font, there is something to behold once you crack open a book with interesting typography on the cover.

5. Clash Of The Color Palettes!

People love colorful things, including books. Colors grab people’s attention. So, it’s no secret that books grab people’s attention with various color palettes. Sometimes, books will purposefully blend conflicting color palettes to illustrate the delusional and or abnormal state of the story itself.

6. Patterns Galore!

Like colors, patterns capture people’s attention. For certain patterns, they can grab readers’ attention within seconds. For other patterns, they can cause someone to feel a certain way (i.e. dizziness, trances, etc.).

Speaking of readers feeling a certain way about a book…

7. Illusionary Depth

Illusions are another way to entice readers when they choose a book. For example, depth can make the book cover seem 3D to someone if they place the book on a flat surface. It’s almost like you can walk right into the book cover!

8. Rough Sketching

Love to draw? So do book designers!

Some books, nowadays, love to present rough sketches on subjects, people, and objects that their stories involve. Straight from the sketchpads of artists, rough sketches can be authentic and realistic to have for book covers.

9. Collage

Many artists love to do collage artwork. By making things touch sensory in their artwork, collage artists succeed in making their art more real.

“Therefore, collage can be a great trend for book covers. Book lovers would not only get to hold a physical copy of a book in their hands, but also feel the art that’s on the cover,” says Misty P. Ingram, a blogger at Revieweal and OXEssays.

10. Surrealistic

Finally, readers are already dreamers in their own right, since the words already suck them into fictional or realistic worlds. Book covers can share in the surrealism as well!

With surrealism, book covers appear more dream-like (peaceful or nightmarish), which can entice readers to open the book and read. This can ultimately create that sense of stepping out of reality for a while.

Conclusion

With these 10 trends, book covers will never stop failing to grab readers’ attention, as they choose their next literary escape! These trends not only experiment with elements (i.e. color, depth, patterns, etc.), but they also speak volumes when it comes to telling a story.

main pointers for book cover design
Covers are the first bit of customer-facing marketing that your reader will ever see. They’re a shortcut—telling the reader in shorthand that they’ll like this book, that it’s in the genre they love to read, and that the person who wrote it is someone they can trust with their valuable (often limited) reading time.
Focusing on the big picture. Strong composition. An intriguing focal point. Clear title and subtitles.
A unique book cover design catches the attention of the potential buyers. A well-designed book cover arises curiosity about the content inside. The design elements such as impressive images, use of colors, typefaces, etc. give a hint about the content of a book.
